Teachers will present various disasters to students and will ask them to identify (in a town hall setting) as to whether it was causes by forces of nature or forces of man. Various scenarios will be discussed indepth, as well as, watching video footage from examples of both. The students will then view a video created by teachers that will stress the importance of their mission in finding which causes greater devastation. Just to get the kids fired up (6th grade), teachers will dress up and fight it out in front of class with light sabers (video has Star Wars theme) as entry activity.
Possible activities students need to complete to be able to do their project:
Mini-lesson on finding credible websites
Mini-lesson on citing sources/pictures
Lesson on scale factor
Group,individual, and peer critiques
Writing workshops on persuasive writing techniques
Mini-lesson on using Windows Live or Moviemaker
Possible projects to demonstrate the collaborative group’s final product:
Students will create a visual representation of the areas affected by the disaster on a ceiling tile using a map found online. The students will use the scale factor that is suggested by their math teacher to recreate this on their tile.
Students will have the choice to create either a video or scrapbook pages to be included with their tile with information surrounding the events leading up to, during, and after their disaster.
Students will present both to the classroom in a town-hall setting.
